Job Title:
R&D Chemist — Lithium-Ion Battery Cathode Materials
Position Summary:
We are seeking an innovative and detail-oriented R&D Chemist to join our technology
team, specializing in the development, synthesis, and characterization of advanced
cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries. The successful candidate will play a key role
in designing and optimizing high-performance cathode materials to support next-
generation energy storage solutions for applications such as electric vehicles and grid
storage.
Key Responsibilities:
Design, synthesize, and conduct experiments to advance cathode materials
formulations.
Develop and optimize laboratory-scale synthesis methods to understand the
fundamentals and to produce high-purity, high-performance cathode powders.
Troubleshoot synthesis and processing challenges to ensure batch-to-batch
consistency and reproducibility.
Perform comprehensive characterization of cathode materials using techniques
such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning and transmission electron microscopy
(SEM/TEM), BET surface area analysis, FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, and thermal
analysis (TGA/DSC).
Interpret physical characterization data from various techniques mentioned
above and correlate the electrochemical data from experiments and
communicate findings to other teams through reports and presentations.
Facilitating knowledge transfer from R& D to pilot scale, including both
fundamental processes understanding and required equipment modifications for
commercialization of new products
Provide technical support during scale-up activities and assist in refining
synthesis methods for larger batch processing.
Maintain detailed and accurate laboratory records and electronic data files.
Prepare clear technical reports, presentations, and research updates for internal
teams and stakeholders.
Ensure safe laboratory practices in the handling and processing of chemicals and
cathode materials.
Mentor and train junior chemists, technicians, or interns on cathode material
synthesis and characterization techniques.
Qualifications:
1-3 years with BSc, or 2 years with MSc in Chemistry, Materials Science, or
Chemical engineering with a strong focus on electrochemical systems (batteries
and fuel cell systems).
Proven experience in the synthesis and characterization of lithium-ion battery
cathode materials.
Experience with the following analysis techniques: XRD (Rietveld Refinement),
SEM/EDX, TGA/DSC.
Experience working at both lab and pilot scale will be preferred.
Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
An innovative mindset and an approach to problem solving based on adaptability.
Hands-on experience with relevant electrochemical testing methods and data
interpretation.
Strong problem-solving skills and ability to design and execute experiments
independently.
Excellent documentation, communication, and teamwork skills.
Experience with programming languages such as python for data analysis would
be an asset.
Experience with various sensors and automated systems would be an asset.
Experience with hazard analysis and 5S organization approach would be an
asset.
Prior experience in a battery R&D setting is an asset.
Proficiency in MS office suite would be an asset.
