JOB TITLE: Registered Nurse
DEPARTMENT: Nursing
POSITION SUMMARY: The Registered Nurse is responsible to the Director of Care and Administrator. They shall provide safe, professional nursing care to the Residents and supervise the care given by RPN’s, PSW’s and HCA’s on an assigned wing.
The Registered Nurse is requested to plan, direct and co-ordinate all activities necessary for the management of the team. They shall work closely with the director of Care, attending Physician, Program Facilitator, Nutrition Manager and all other personnel
Recommended Qualifications:
• Current registration as a Registered Nurse in the College of Nurses of Ontario
• Experience in Geriatric, Rehabilitation, or Long-Term Nursing is desirable, or completion of a course in Geriatric Nursing.
• Skill in care planning, co-ordination and supervising the work of other Nursing personnel
• Maturity with good physical and mental health
• Current CPR, WHMIS, & GPA Certification
Responsibilities:
• Provides Nursing care in accordance with Administrative Policies, Physician’s orders and established standards of Gerontology.
• Assesses a Resident’s condition by recognizing and interpreting symptoms and signs, and where appropriate initiates remedial health measures.
• Is personally responsible for the Nursing care of all acutely ill and unstable residents and the recording of pertinent related information.
• Assists the Physician in diagnostic and therapeutic measures in the absence of Director of Care or designate.
• Is responsible for the safe administration of medication as prescribed.
• Observes, reports and records symptoms and change of condition of Residents. (This includes Daily Communication Recorded, taped reports and written Progress Notes).
• Maintains accurate and complete records of nursing observations and care.
• Identifies and understands the needs of individual Residents.
• Reports any occurrence of a critical injury to the Administrator/DOC immediately.
• Completes individual quarterly RAI MDS Resident assessments and updates the care plan accordingly.
• Investigates any reports of unsafe physical conditions, equipment, machines and devices immediately to DOC or designate
• Ensures that incident/accident reports are completed.
• Ensures that employees work in the manner, and with the protective devices, measures, and procedures required.
• Is responsible for the proper care of any equipment used in providing care to Residents.
• Advises staff of the existence of any potential or actual danger to the health and safety if the employee of which the RN is aware.
• Assists in teaching Residents good health habits.
• Informs Dietary re: special diets, changes in diets and Resident meal attendance.
• Assists in maintaining a physical and psycho-social environment which meets the needs of the Resident.
• In general emergencies, or rapid deterioration of a resident’s condition, RN is responsible to notify the Physician, family, appropriate Clergy etc. as necessary.
• Assists in maintaining adequate standards of cleanliness.
• Deals tactfully and courteously with Residents, Residents’ families and visitors.
• Follows “Best Practice” guidelines in nursing practice.
• Assists with Inservice Education of Nursing personnel and assists with Nursing research where appropriate.
• Assists in training and supervision of nursing personnel.
• Establishes and maintains good working relationships with all personnel in the Home.
• Set standards of Residents care for the Home.
• Set goals and objectives annually for the Home.
• Implements policies and procedures for the facility.
• Conduct or guide the nursing program to monitor, evaluate and improve the quality of nursing services provided by the facility.
• Support and promote the orientation, staff development and continuing education of staff.
• Monitor and evaluate staff compliance with facility policies and procedures.
• Performs other related duties as required: Doctor’s rounds, replacement of staff on weekends.
