JOB TITLE: PSW/HCA/NA

DEPARTMENT: Nursing

POSITION SUMMARY: The Personal Support Worker/Health Care Aide or Nurses' Aide is a member of the Health Care Team who performs their duties under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse or Registered Practical Nurse.

The fundamentals role of the PSW, HCA or NA is to provide safe, quality care within their scope of practice.

Recommended Qualifications:

• Personal Support Worker Certification from a PSW Program that meets the following requirements:
o The Program follows the Personal Support Worker Program Standard set forth in 2014 by the Ministry of Training, Colleges, and Universities, and
o The Program is comprised of a minimum of 600 hours of learning in duration, counting both class time and practical experience time.
Responsibilities:


• To provide Resident-Centered Care to all residents
• To assist with the admission of a new Resident as per New Resident Admission Duties.
• To help provide for the physical, environmental, emotional and spiritual comfort
and safety of the Resident by:

i) having some understanding of the meanings of behaviours related to Gerontology
ii) having some understanding of how different cultural backgrounds affect behaviour
iii) having some understanding of the religious beliefs of the Resident and how this affects their daily lives.
iv) giving attention to the general health care of the Residents by ensuring they are properly bathed and dressed at all times.
v) observe for proper diet, elimination, and diversional therapy.
vi) assisting with maintenance of an attractive and comfortable environment for the Resident with special consideration given to cleanliness, ventilation, lighting, general safety and supplies.
vii) remembering ALL should be treated with respect, kindness and dignity at all times.
viii) having a good understanding of IPAC practices

• Assist with or complete personal grooming i.e.: nailcare, shaving, make up and oral hygiene (done with AM care or bath) as well as shampoos.
• Assist Residents to and from dining room.
• Assist with feeding of Residents as needed.
• Assist with the passing and feeding of nourishments to all Residents.
• Assist Residents to and from bathroom, offers bedpan and keeps incontinent Residents clean at all times, changing linens as often as necessary. Encourages self-help measures and activities.
• Prepare Residents for tests and x-rays, visits by physicians and dentists, occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy, recreation, visits to Chapel and other areas of the home and may transport them to areas or departments where the above takes place. May accompany Residents to other facilities for the above services, as directed by the Director of Care or the Registered Nurse.
• Perform personal services for Residents within reason, such as reading to them, writing letters, operating T.V. and radio, assisting them with recreational and occupational therapy projects in their rooms. May run errands and do whatever is possible to promote comfort, safety, security and rehabilitation.
• Provide PM care and settle Resident to bed.

• Assist relatives, visitors, and guests, prn.
• Assist with and/or perform procedures as outlined, with proper instruction and supervision such as: Admitting, transferring, discharging Residents; measuring and recording intake and output; collecting specimens such as urine, stool and sputum and caring for Residents in isolation. Will also see that safety devices are in use and safety precautions are followed. Will assist RN in giving treatments and examining Residents. Will assist with the care of dying and/or deceased Residents.
• Use proper technique in all Resident care to prevent spread of disease and
infections. (cross contamination)
• Observe Residents and note physical condition, attitude, reaction, appetite, etc. and report changes or unusual findings to R.N/RPN.
• Assist with restorative and rehabilitative care of Residents and instructions in self
help, using medical appliances etc.
• Chart required information and signs entries on appropriate documentation.
• Answer call bells, may answer telephone, runs errands as directed by Director of Care or Registered Nurse.
• Participate in ward or unit cleaning duties which are not performed by housekeeping personnel as directed.
• Give and receive report. Attend in-service meetings.
• Recognize and work in the manner and with protective devices, measures, procedures and equipment required to maintain safety and health for everyone.
• Report any unsafe or potential hazards to RN or RPN.
• May perform other duties as directed by Director of Care or Registered Nurse.
• Take and record oral and tympanic temperatures, heights, weights, pulse and respirations of Residents.
• Complete colostomy changes and reports the results to the RN or RPN.
• Apply prescribed creams/treatments to intact affected areas and reports results to
RN or RPN and signs treatment sheet.
• Follow all IPAC practices.
