Job Description
JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the Program Manager, the Health Promoter is an integral member of a multidisciplinary team. The Health Promoter provides their expertise, in determinants of health, health promotion theory and health promotion strategies and their application to program planning implementation and evaluation. This position researches and interprets information, evaluates strategies, programs, resources and policies and provides recommendations using current literature and research in order to effectively meet the Ontario Public Health Standards (OPHS). The Health Promoter identifies program priorities by reviewing existing epidemiological, behavioural and socio-demographic data, and thorough assessments of community assets and needs. Through facilitating community mobilization, the Health Promoter builds capacity and partnerships around shared health priorities. The Health Promoter maintains current knowledge of the literature and best practices and critically appraises research to assist with setting priorities, targeting programs and developing public health strategies and health promotion interventions. The Health Promoter will also provide consultation to staff, provincial and community partners regarding research and evaluation, health promotion theories, best practices, and policy development. The Health Promoter may be assigned to one of several programs in the divisions as noted above.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor's degree required in a relevant major from one of the following programs: Public Health, Health Sciences or Social Sciences with a focus on Health Promotion.

KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE

  • Two to three years experience in community-based health promotion.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of public health, population health, health promotion concepts including social marketing, behaviour change theory the health status of populations, inequities in health, and the social the determinants of health and illness.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to complete program, intervention and activity level planning and implementation utilizing evidence informed public health practices
  • Must demonstrate knowledge, skills and experience applying the Health Promoter competencies, Ottawa Charter, Health Impact Pyramid and Social Determinants of Health and Health Equity.
  • Demonstrated ability to critically assess research for relevance and application to program planning. Knowledge of current Public Health issues, procedures and legislation (Ontario Public Health Standards).

SKILLS

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated ability to synthesize complex information for a variety of audiences
  • Strong facilitation, project management, partnership/collaboration, planning, problem-solving and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to apply knowledge of public health, health promotion and/or technical knowledge including population health, social determinants of health, assessment of research evidence, epidemiology and applicable legislation
  • Able to initiate connections and actively engage with vulnerable populations who have multi-sector complex challenges.
  • Demonstrated community assessment skills
  • Willingness to take initiative, and the ability to assess and initiate actions independently
  • Strong group facilitation skills
  • Excellent organization and time management skills
  • Knowledge and skills in the following areas: community mobilization; healthy public policy development; mass/multi-channel media and communications; knowledge translation, social marketing; behaviour change; and advocacy.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Must display an acceptable comfort level with various health related topics.
  • Must maintain ability to travel in a timely manner to other offices, work locations or sites as authorized by the Corporation for business reasons.
  • Vaccinations as outlined in departmental policy.
  • Work flexible hours as required in response to community-based health issues
